Cough
We have all gone through some form of coughing and understand very well that even the slightest of them is not a pleasant thing to behold. This is more irritating when the cough won’t go away for a subsequent amount of time, sometimes even leading to unintentional discharge of tears. Persistent coughs can be due to a number of reasons that might cause a disturbance in breathing thus triggering a long cough.
When the sensory nerves in the respiratory tract get foreign particles such as dust or even food particles, the normal breathing pattern is interfered with, causing a reflex in the body that tries to force air out. This is what then comes out as a cough. Persistent coughing may not be a life threatening ailment but all the same, you should seek treatment for there could be an underlying problem that only a doctor would identify.
A persistent cough can be as a result of lung infection. Other factors can be common cold, accidental swallowing of food or water through the air pipe, pneumonia, heart failure, blood clotting in the lungs, smoking, asthma, acidity of the stomach among others.
Although common colds and coughs usually last up to four days, it is advisable that you see a doctor as soon as you notice blood stained mucous when you cough, foul smell in saliva, you experience severe chest pains, sudden weight loss or any other symptoms that are not associated with a normal common cold or cough. Remember to seek medical advice because there is no such thing as a “normal” cough.
