Many of us know the pillow as something we place on the bed while sleeping to support our head and neck and we probably do not care to know anything much about them beyond that. Beside the practical and functional use of this item comes the decorative and artistic aspects of the same, with features that are just too hard to ignore.
There are numerous forms of the pillow, all having different names depending on their uses. Ever heard of donut, moshi, fluffy, lumbar, down among other many types of pillows? Their uses differ so much such that you have to be keen when buying them lest you find that they cannot serve the purpose you initially intended for them. You will find that some of them cannot be used for sleep.
The history of this small but very essential item dates back to ancient Egypt where it was used by the wealthy people for very special reasons. They were used in tombs of pharaohs and although they were used to support lifeless bodies, they had all manner of artistic embroidery, sewing, dyeing and fringing that gave them a glamorous look.
The Chinese took over the pillow concept but they seemed to know too well the value off the saying ‘imitation is limitation’. They modified it in such a way that it looked so different from the way we know it today; theirs was a wooden one made from bamboo and in the shape of a box. How comfortable it was is the question that is yet to be answered. However, today it has been modified in such a way that it has become become more modern and has conformed to what we know today. Pillows today are in use for reasons as diverse as medical ones.
